[ New Kids on the Block ] New Kids on the Block hangin’ tough on tour

TORONTO – New Kids on the Block member Joey McIntyre says a recent show to promote their upcoming arena tour wasn’t their “finest moment.”

But he says it’s also not indicative of the upcoming stadium performances that will bring them to Canada in June and July.

At a recent New York concert, band member Jonathan Knight suddenly walked off stage mid-show, never to return.

During a visit to Toronto, Knight admits he’s long battled anxiety issues and that it continues to dog him today.

But he says it’s not as serious as it once was, insisting the New York meltdown had more to do with lack of sleep and problems with his “day job” as a real estate broker. It’s a career he started when he retreated from the limelight after the group disbanded in 1994.

McIntyre, Knight and fellow members Jordan Knight and Danny Wood were in Toronto to promote their new album “10″ and an upcoming tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees. A publicist said fifth member Donnie Wahlberg was tied up with work on his CBS series “Blue Bloods.”

The Canadian Press spoke with McIntyre and Jonathan Knight on Saturday about hangin’ tough on tour, a new album and couch-surfing at the homes of fans.

Is it surreal to be promoting new material and starting an arena tour some 25 years after you started? I think a lot of people doubted you’d be at it this long.

Jonathan Knight: I think it’s doubly surreal for me. Thirty years ago I never thought we’d be back in ’08 and in ’08 I never thought we’d be here in ’13. It’s been a blessing.

The band is getting good reviews for the new album “10,” do you credit that to a newfound confidence and maturity?

BOSTON (CBS) – A boy band heartthrob is hoping to take on Heartbreak Hill this year.

Joey McIntyre of the New Kids On The Block will be on the starting block in Hopkinton on Marathon Monday. He’s running for his mom.

“I’m not nervous for Monday because I feel like I’m prepared. I’ve done the work,” said McIntyre.

Though he’s no longer “new” or a “kid”, NKOTB’s McIntyre is determined to conquer Boston.

“It is my first marathon and I figure I’m going to do Boston because I might not ever want to do it again,” he said.

The 40-year-old pop star has a powerful motivator.

“I’m running, number one, for my mom. My mom suffers from Alzheimer’s. I just feel like there’s a lot of energy, a lot of momentum in finding a cure. And the more awareness, and of course the more funds we can raise, the better,” he said.

[ Donnie Wahlberg ] NKOTB Star On Embracing Their ‘Boy-Bandness,’ Losing a Sister and TV Success

Donnie Wahlberg’s been making love.

The 43-year-old singer and actor is returning to his pop star past with New Kids on the Block’s just-released record 10 and tells AOL Music that making the album was a labor of love unlike any other in the group’s three-decade span.

“When we were young we were all about dating girls and having fun,” he says. “It’s like we’ve stopped having sex and started making love. That’s where we’re at as a group now — this is what we do, we love what we do and we’re in love with what we do… so it makes making love all the more special!

“I enjoy every aspect more now than as a kid — performing, recording, touring. I feel more at ease and confident, which is saying a lot because it’s a young man’s game.”

While they’re no longer kids, Wahlberg says the band have finally embraced their “boy-bandness,” returning to their roots and having more fun recording 10 than 2008’s reunion record The Block.

Still, learning to appreciate what they have hasn’t been easy. Following the mind-blowing success which saw them dominate the late-’80s/ early-’90s pop scene — much like One Direction does today — the Boston quintet were left directionless in their early 20s and stumped about their futures, having already experienced a lifetime’s worth of ups and downs.

“It’s like you’re on a really fast train and assume it’ll keep going but one day it stops,” says Wahlberg. “If you’re not prepared, it’s difficult. The public has an opinion of who you are and may never accept you as anything else.

“It may not seem a big deal, but when you’re twentysomething and been through one of the most exhilarating rides of most people’s lifetimes, you think it’s forever. So being faced with, ‘What will I do for the next 70 years?’ is daunting because it’s not easy to be on the cover of every magazine, then take a job at McDonalds.
