[ JOEY ] MTV.com: NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre Doubts The Staying Power Of One Direction

Veteran boy bander Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block isn’t sure red-hot British bands One Direction and The Wanted are going to be long-term players on the music scene.

Talking to Yahoo UK, McIntyre said, “The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted – neither of them are going to work in America – it hasn’t happened in 50 years so why now?”

(He had to be speaking specifically about British boy bands, as his own group found success in the U.S. in the early-90s and NKOTB’s tour mates the Backstreet Boys, along with NSYNC and 98 Degrees, led the charge in the late-90s/early-00s boy band Renaissance.)

[ JOEY ] NKOTB Reckon One Direction Will Have It Tough in America

Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block fame has been talking with Yahoo OMG! about the impact that British boybands One Direction and The Wanted are having overseas.

The ageing pop-star said:”The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted — neither of them are going to work in America – it hasn’t happened in 50 years so why now?”

Joey added: “They need to go through some tough times and have a period where they learn from all their mistakes — they don’t have the chance to do that.”

NKOTB are currently prepping for another tour with the Backstreet Boys, and Howie Dorough also gave his thoughts on the current Brit invasion, saying:

“I’m not one to tell anyone what to do how to make their career happen, the hardest places to crack are the UK and USA. And for success to happen a lot of things need to go right. It was a lot of right time right place for Backstreet Boys.”

[ NKOTBSB ] ‘Their American success won’t last’ say US boy bands Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block

While One Direction and The Wanted take the States by storm hitting the top of the American charts boy band pros, Backstreet Boys’ Howie Dorough and New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre don’t reckon our British boys are going to last long across the pond.

Joey said: “The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted — neither of them are going to work in America – it hasn’t happened in 50 years so why now?” (We hope he’s proved wrong!)

Howard, whose group is gearing up for a joint tour with NKOTB, was a little softer with his opinions and believes luck plays the largest part in an act’s success.

He told us: “I’m not one to tell anyone what to do how to make their career happen, the hardest places to crack are the UK and USA.

“And for success to happen a lot of things need to go right. It was a lot of right time right place for Backstreet Boys.

[ NKOTBSB ] NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK FLY THE US FLAG FOR ONE DIRECTION

CRACKING America is the ultimate for any budding British group.

And boyband kings New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys are backing our very own One Direction to triumph this year.

If anyone should know about selling records to boyband fans it’s Joey McIntyre and Howie Dorough who have sold more than 200million albums between their two groups.

And they can’t get enough of all things British when we meet up for a spot of traditional English afternoon tea at London’s Dover Street Arts Club.

Joey says: “One Direction are the cutest things I’ve ever seen. I didn’t know if they could break America when I heard the single but now I’ve seen them I have no doubt.

“But JLS don’t have the right look.Let’s face it, you have to be cute to be in a boyband, and for people to like your personalities.

“I was talking to James Corden the other night about The Wanted. I didn’t know they don’t dance. That loses you 10 boyband points.” Joey and the rest of the New Kids – Jordan, 41, and Jonathan Knight, 43, Donnie Wahlberg, 42, and Danny Wood, 42 – scored hits including Hangin’ Tough and Step By Step in the ’80s.

Exclusive interview: Joey McIntyre from NKOTB and Howie D from Backstreet Boys chat X Factor and fame regrets

THEY’VE done it all before and they’re doing it all over again – but this time they’re a little bit wiser.
Joey McIntyre and Howie D from NKOTBSB have got some serious advice for One Direction.

Having experienced levels of fame with New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys in the 80s and 90s that the 1D boys are only just approaching, Joey and Howie are more than aware of the pitfalls of fame.

When we asked them to offer some advice to the boys, they told us: “It’s every 15 year old’s dream to be rich and famous and tour the world and be in a band – and it is cool.

“But you’re not going to have a girlfriend, you’re not going to finish school, you’re not going to your prom… you’re going to miss all of those experiences in life.”

[ NKOTBSB ] EQ Interview with Joey McIntyre of New Kids On The Block and Howie D of Backstreet Boys – NKOTBSB!

by Raj Rudolph

I won’t lie. I’m a massive fan of New Kids On The Block. Growing up in rural Oregon in the late eighties, if you didn’t listen to the likes of Garth Brooks, AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen, well you were pretty much a girl. You wanna talk about bullying…try being a sixteen year old teenage boy and wearing your “Hangin Tough” tour jacket to home room – it was pretty rough to say the least. […]

[ JOEY ] New Kids On The Block: One Direction need ‘swagger’ and ‘personality’ to crack the US

Veteran US pop band New Kids On The Block know what it takes to win over America – so they’ve decided to pass on their best advice to our One Direction boys.

1D have just kicked off their tour with Big Time Rush across the pond – but just because they’re Britain’s favourite guy group, doesn’t mean they’ll be a hit over there.

‘Even though the UK and England are big, it still sort of has a small town feel,’ says NKOTB singer Joey McIntyre, 39.

[ NKOTBSB ] One Direction need more attitude, say New Kids On The Block stars

One Direction have to get their swagger on if they are to win over American girls, according to the country’s two biggest boybands.

The X Factor youngsters were given some tough advice on how to crack the States by members of the Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block.

The 90s groups delivered their verdict on Simon Cowell’s doe-eyed lads when they touched down on our shores to promote their joint NKOTBSB British tour in April.

‘Even though the UK and England are big, it still sort of has a small town feel,’ 39-year-old New Kids singer Joey McIntyre told me.

‘That’s why you guys love your artists so much but boybands are so personality driven that sometimes it’s about connecting with that and if the American girls don’t connect with that swagger, it’s hard.’
